JOHANNESBURG – Statistics South Africa said the country’s unemployment rate crossed the dreaded 35% threshold in the fourth quarter of 2021, taking the rate to 35.3%.

Recent research shows that over the long term, South Africa’s youth unemployment rate is projected to trend around 64% in 2022 and 62% in 2023, according to econometric models from Statistics South Africa.

Advantage Learn said that given the numbers, learners should be prepared for the transfer of educational skills needed in the future.

The road to college is never easy if you are unprepared.

Head of operations at education provider Advantage Learn, Tracey Young-Thompson said the National Benchmark Test (NBT) during the matric plays a huge role in preparing students for college life.

“NBTs were set up to test a learner’s academic readiness for higher education. In fact, they are standardized tests that give universities a good idea of a learner’s skills and readiness for the rigors of higher education,” said Tracey Young-Thompson, operations manager at the education provider. AdvantageLearn.

the National Benchmark Testing Project (NBTP) was commissioned in 2005 by Higher Education South Africa (HESA), now called Universities South Africa (USAf).

The main objective of the project was to assess the candidates’ entry-level academic skills in academic literacy, quantitative literacy and mathematics.

“Most degree programs require NBTs to be written,” Young-Thompson said.

The NBTs are designed specifically to complement the National Senior Certificate as they provide an independent and objective assessment against which the performance of National Senior Certificate students can be compared and calibrated.

According to Advantage Learn, most grade 12 students applying for higher education in South Africa, as well as learners who wish to enroll in competitive study programs and/or scholarship programs, write the NBTs .

NBTs are a unique assessment because they are different from what learners are used to. They are in a multiple-choice format and calculators are not allowed in the math portion of the test.

NBT results are valid for three years after the learner has passed the tests.

“Succeeding the NBTs is more important than ever as there is increasing competition to enter higher education institutions. More and more institutions require it to be written before the closing date for applications for this course,” said Young-Thompson.
