Updated mask requirements for the start – University life

Dear Patriot Friends:

The recent increase in COVID-19 cases has raised concerns and questions in the University community that I want to answer as we head into the start week and end of the Spring 2022 semester.

We continue to monitor conditions daily. The number of cases at George Mason University in recent weeks remains well below the peak we experienced this winter. We are following current CDC and local public health guidelines on how to respond to COVID conditions. As of this week, Fairfax County community rates are rated as average, and the county is not calling for a return to mask mandates at this time.

We will continue with our current on-campus policy, with the exception of upcoming graduation and indoor graduation ceremonies. We recognize that many family members will attend these events, who see it as a unique opportunity to see their loved ones achieve an educational milestone. Many attendees may have avoided public events due to COVID risks, so we owe it to our families to take extra steps for these events and create as safe an environment as possible. Additionally, many come from Northern Virginia, where the prevalence rate is rated as medium. Therefore, for the start at EagleBank Arena and all indoor graduation celebrations, we will require all students, faculty, staff, and guests in attendance to wear masks. We will have additional equipment available for those arriving without a mask.

In the lead up to summer, we will require all summer students living on campus to be tested regularly and we will reassess as necessary. We will share more details about our summer plans shortly.

Congratulations on completing another semester in such a safe and responsible manner.
